Babel (2006) - Helicopter / 'Iguazu' scene [1080p]Three concurrent but interrelated stories covering four countries on three continents are presented. Just outside the small town of Tazzarine in the Moroccan desert, a goat farmer named Abdullah has just purchased a rifle from his neighbor.
The rifle is for his eldest son, pre-teen Ahmed, to shoot jackals who have been killing their goats. However, Abdullah's younger son, Yussef, who in many ways demonstrates older tendencies than his brother, ends up being more natural with the firearm.
Fooling around with the rifle, the boys take target at various items, testing its shooting distance. In doing so, Yussef shoots at a tour bus off in the distance.
The boys can tell by the actions of the bus that Yussef probably hit it. The two scared boys later learn indirectly that an American tourist was killed on the bus.
With this information, the boys have to figure out what to do. The information they receive is incorrect as the shooting victim, Susan Jones, did not die immediately from her gunshot wound to the shoulder, but is seriously wounded.
She and her husband Richard Jones were on vacation at the time trying to mend their loving but troubled marriage, their problems largely from not being able to deal with the grief associated with the recent SIDS death of their youngest child, Sam.
Richard not only has to figure out how to get Susan the needed medical attention required to save her life, which is difficult as the closest hospital is a two hour drive away, but deal with a bus-load of other passengers who can sympathize with the Jones' plight but are concerned for their own health and safety based partly on speculation that Susan's shooting was a terrorist attack.
While Richard and Susan's time away from their home in San Diego is extended, Amelia, their illegal alien Mexican housekeeper, has to extend her care of the Jones' two other children, young adolescents Mike and Debbie.
This causes an issue for Amelia as her son Luis is getting married in their hometown just across the border in Mexico and Amelia can't find anyone to sit with the children during the wedding.
As such, she decides to bring the children to the wedding, which leads to potential problems as she does not have written consent by Richard or Susan to cross the border with them.
Amelia, in large part, is at the mercy of her headstrong nephew, Santiago, her and the children's chauffeur that day. Meanwhile in Tokyo, Chieko Wataya, a deaf teenager, is mourning the recent suicide death of her mother.
At the same time, she is reaching her sexual awakening, which she is having problems dealing with, as she is often rejected by boys her own age because of her disability.
As such, she seeks out that sexual release with older men in inappropriate ways, this sex which she equates with the love that seems to be now missing from the Wataya household.
These issues with Chieko come to a head when the police come looking for her father, for what she believes is their furthering questioning about her mother's death and if it really was suicide.
A Moroccan family acquires a rifle to protect their goats. An American woman, on a bus tour with her husband, is accidentally shot, which is in turn grossly exaggerated by the press who are quick to label the incident as a "terrorist attack".
The same couple's children accompany their long-time caretaker to Mexico to attend her son's wedding, where upon re-entering the United States face problems.
A Japanese widower confronts difficulties in communicating with his deaf teenage daughter whom simply craves human contact. Matthew Lucas.
There are moments when a lot is left unsaid. There's a remarkable stillness and delicacy as the music and images interplay and do all the talking.
Namrata Joshi. An irredeemably overdetermined, far-fetched and transparently schematic piece. PJ Nabarro. On a practical level it's hard not to see that nearly every calamity in Babel could have been avoided had the characters exercised better judgment.

A shorter movie with tighter focus would have had a greater dramatic impact without having to sacrifice its social message.
The colonialist attitudes killed any sympathy for the central characters. But overall, it is still engaging and still worth seeing.
Robert B Super Reviewer. Dec 12, Intertwining stories and lives across multiple countries and cultures, "Babel" covers its bases on almost every type of person and ethnicity that you could think of while weaving together a complex tale to which they all connect.
Whether its two harmless young boys in Morocco who are given a rifle to watch over sheep, only to accidentally shoot a white tourist Cate Blanchett who is traveling with her husband Brad Pitt , or a Hispanic nanny that takes the two kids that she watches over to Mexico for a wedding, only to lose them in the desert, or a deaf Japanese girl who seeks sexual solace following the suicide of her mother, all of these small little tales tell a much larger story of human connection and raw emotions.
Nothing is ever telegraphed in the film, with many of the conclusions of the film catching the viewer by complete blind side. The key performances from this assemble come from lead Brad Pitt, who delivers the high caliber turn they we know and love him for, as he struggles to hold himself together as his wife is dying by his side.
Also, Adriana Barraza as the nanny gives a hugely refreshing turn, especially in her heightened emotion states while fleeing the border police and searching for the lost children.
Even young Boubker Ait El Caid, a local from Morocco delivers a striking performance as the young boy with the gun, with much more on his mind than naked girls and relieving himself after he injures an innocent woman.
Almost two and a half hours long, "Babel" grabs your attention with its intricate storytelling and heightened dramatic suspense, continuing the trend of films like "Crash" that bring together well-known ensemble casts and divvies them up into a wide open world that brings to cinematic life the notion that it's a small world.
Christopher H Super Reviewer. Aug 14, This film is a masterpiece. I was completely blown away by the well interwoven plot, the characters and their persnal fates.
The picture is shot in the style of Steven Soderburgh's Traffic and even it's the structure is similar Stephen Mirrione who else edited Traffic co-edited with Douglas Crise work for Babel.
The performaces is tremendous but the one that stuck out the most imo is from Adriana Barraza. Her performance is captivating and mezmerising from beginning to end.
The ending of the picture hits on an emotional level and it works. Abdullah gives the rifle to his two young sons, Yussef and Ahmed played by local non-professional actors Boubker Ait El Caid and Said Tarchini , and sends them out to tend the herd.
The film has already established that there is a degree of competitiveness between the two brothers. The older is critical of the younger for spying on his sister while she changes her clothes the film shows that she is aware of his presence.
Competing between themselves and doubtful of the rifle's purported three-kilometer range, they decide to test it out, aiming first at rocks, a moving car on a highway below, and then at a bus carrying Western tourists on the same highway traveling in the opposite direction to the car.
The two boys realize what has happened and flee the scene, hiding the rifle in the hills that night. Glimpses of television news programs reveal that the US government holds the shooting to be a terrorist act and is pressuring the Moroccan government to apprehend the culprits.
Having traced the rifle back to Hassan, the Moroccan police descend quickly on his house and roughly question him and his wife until they reveal that the rifle was given to him by a Japanese man, and then sold to Abdullah.
The two boys see the police on the road and confess to their father what they have done. They believe at the time that the American woman has died of her wounds.
The three flee from their house, retrieving the rifle as they go. The police corner them on the rocky slope of a hill and open fire.
After his brother is hit in the leg, Yussef returns fire, striking one police officer in the shoulder. The police continue shooting, eventually hitting Ahmed in the back, possibly fatally injuring him.
As his father rages with grief, Yussef eventually surrenders and confesses to all the crimes, begging clemency for his family and medical assistance for his brother.
The police take him into custody. The family's fate is unresolved. The movie's first plot is interspersed with scenes of Richard and Susan.
They came on vacation in Morocco to get away from things and mend their own marital woes.

Mark Holcomb. Well acted and handsomely photographed, but still extraordinarily overpraised and overblown, a middlebrow piece of near-nonsense: the kind of self-conscious arthouse cinema that is custom-tailored and machine-tooled for the dinner-party demographic.
Peter Bradshaw. Babel can be unnecessarily convoluted, ultimately though it's the stark simplicity of the dilemmas faced by each character that hits home, wherever that may be.
Stella Papamichael. If misery is your pornography, Babel is your holy grail. Dave Calhoun. It's a great film made with style and heart and hope, a cautionary parable and an almost certain Oscar contender.
Roger Moore. The experience of watching Babel is undeniably riveting: Even if the film doesn't really lead anywhere, you still can't take your eyes off it.
Rene Rodriguez. See Babel while it still illuminates a big screen, for all the clues it contains about our times, as we babble more and more about less and less.
